"In 1929, the Wall Street Crash struck. Cunard was hit particularly badly, and by the 1930s the company was making trading losses running into the millions. In return for a £3 million loan to complete the Queen Mary, pictured, Cunard was forced by the Government to merge with similiarly struggling White Star Line. William Miller says the ship became an unintended symbol of Britain’s “fortitude and determination” in overcoming the Depression when she was finally launched in 1934.”
